SEX, DEATH & THE OCCULT
Part textbook, part transcription of an online course, & part poetic grimoire. A grimoire is a fancy term for a collection of magical practices and ideas. Do you believe in magic? Does anyone really believe or disbelieve in magic? Maybe it is more about a kind of feeling. A special flavor of attention, energy and embodiment. A collection of interests in symbolism, manifestation, intention, ritual, ancient wisdom and the emancipatory vibe of all things wondrous. The provocative title of this book (Sex, Death & the Occult) is an homage to my childhood mentor Robert Anton Wilson and reflects the name of an online course hosted by my friends at the Parallax Academy. The basic content of this book is the transcription of that course, additionally my personal willingness to engage in the “occult” versions of wisdom development alongside my other work in more standard areas of existential self-cultivation and community building. In this first volume of his book series The Evolution of Meaning, Dempsey introduces a theory of meaning based in thermodynamics and information processing. Tracking the trajectory of this learning process through the emergent levels of Matter, Life, Mind, and Culture, we see how meaning takes on new shades of depth and informational richness across scales. I have never called myself a shaman. People occasionally refer to me that way either because they are being playful or perhaps because they want me to talk about the shamanic turn in spirituality, philosophy, and developmental psychology. Usually, I say “shamanism” in quotes. Or else I say “something-like-shamanism” or I say, “whatever we want to call it.” My own interest revolves around a study (that I made up) called metashamanics.

Black metamodernism??? That’s right. They said it couldn’t be done, but it turns out ‘they’ were racists. Or am I a racist? Maybe. Saying, “No!” is just a little too easy. And apparently, all the avowed non-racists & anti-racists are not preventing widespread cultural backsliding. Let us investigate together with daring minds, empathic hearts, serious levity, and an abundance of nuances.
